Wow! The Bible Says That

Proverbs is a book of wise sayings. Everyone should read this book because it contains instructions for daily living. God in this book addresses one of the major themes we see on many of out TV programs today. The Word of God is blunt so don’t look for sugar coated sayings in this book.

Proverbs 5:3-9 (NCV)

3 The words of another man's wife may seem sweet as honey; they may be as smooth as olive oil.

4 But in the end she will bring you sorrow, causing you pain like a two-edged sword.

5 She is on the way to death; her steps are headed straight to the grave.

6 She gives little thought to life. She doesn't even know that her ways are wrong.

7 Now, my sons, listen to me, and don't ignore what I say.

8 Stay away from such a woman. Don't even go near the door of her house,

9 or you will give your riches to others, and the best years of your life will be given to someone cruel.

The above passage states that the adulterous woman is headed for hell and she does not realize that what she is doing is wrong. This thought is further revealed in Proverbs 30:20 which states: “ Such is the way of an adulterous woman; she eateth, and wipeth her mouth, and saith, I have done no wickedness.[KJV] The New Living Translation states the verse in this manner: “An adulterous woman consumes a man, then wipes her mouth and says, “What’s wrong with that?” The Amplified Bible states: “This is the way of an adulterous woman: she eats and wipes her mouth and says, I have done no wickedness.” Notice in each of these

translations the woman sees no wrong in having an extra marital affair [committing adultery]. This also applies to the man as well as the woman.

What danger is there in having an extra marital affair? Well, once again God gives us the answer in His Word. Proverbs 6:26 states: “For a prostitute will bring you to poverty, but sleeping with another man’s wife will cost you your life.”[New Living Translation] Notice there are two types of women mentioned—prostitutes normally single women who have sex for pay and then you have married women who have sex with a man other than her husband for pleasure or pay. This verse makes it clear that sleeping with another man’s wife can cost a man his life. Many people in our culture today are not aware that doing Old Testament

times when a man and woman were caught committing adultery they were to be put to death by the command of God. God told Moses in Leviticus 20:10: "'If a man has sexual relations with his neighbor's wife, both the man and the woman are guilty of adultery and must be put to death.” [New Century Version] (Read Leviticus 20:11-22 for a list of other sex sins with the penalties listed.)

For many married men and women having an extra marital affair seems to be no harm. But look at what Proverbs 6:32 it states: “Adultery is a brainless act, soul-destroying, self-destructive” [New Living Translation] The Message Bible translates the above verse in the following manner: “ But the man who commits adultery is an utter fool, for he destroys himself.” According to this translation any man or woman who has an extra marital affair is an utter fool.

There are some people in our society who have the mentality that if I can’t have you then no one else will have you and they will kill the other party. A final word from Proverbs states:

“My son, don't be held captive by a woman who takes part in adultery.

Don't hug another man's wife.

21 The Lord sees everything you do,

and he watches where you go.” [Proverbs 5:20-21 NCV]

The Lord sees everything that we do and will punish us for the sins which we commit. Let us do good and refrain from evil. I want to leave you with the following translations of Revelation 21:8:

Revelation 21:8 (GW)

8 But cowardly, unfaithful, and detestable people, murderers, sexual sinners, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars will find themselves in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”

Revelation 21:8 (NCV)

8 But cowards, those who refuse to believe, who do evil things, who kill, who sin sexually, who do evil magic, who worship idols, and who tell lies--all these will have a place in the lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death."

The place of burning sulfur is commonly called hell. All sinners who have not accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savor will end up in hell which is the second death.

Anyone guilty of having an extra marital affair can be forgiven by confessing their sin to Jesus and stop sinning. Lets look at the woman who was caught committing adultery and was brought to Jesus.

“ 1 Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 But early in the morning he went back to the Temple, and all the people came to him, and he sat and taught them. 3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery. They forced her to stand before the people. 4 They said to Jesus, "Teacher, this woman was caught having sexual relations with a man who is not her husband. 5 The law of Moses commands

that we stone to death every woman who does this. What do you say we should do?" 6 They were asking this to trick Jesus so that they could have some charge against him.

But Jesus bent over and started writing on the ground with his finger. 7 When they continued to ask Jesus their question, he raised up and said, "Anyone here who has never sinned can throw the first stone at her." 8 Then Jesus bent over again and wrote on the ground.

9 Those who heard Jesus began to leave one by one, first the older men and then the others. Jesus was left there alone with the woman standing before him. 10 Jesus raised up again and asked her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one judged you guilty?" 11 She answered, "No one, sir."

Then Jesus said, "I also don't judge you guilty. You may go now, but don't sin anymore."[John 8:1-11 New Century Version]

Jesus forgave her and told her not to sin anymore. This lesson applies to men and women. “You must not commit adultery.”[Exodus 20:14] David after committing adultery and having the woman’s husband killed stated in his confession prayer: “ Against you, and you alone, have I sinned; I have done what is evil in your sight. You will be proved right in what you say, and your judgment against me is just.”[Psalm 51:4 NLT] It is recommended that you read this entire 51st Psalm because it is a Psalm of confession and forgiveness of sin. Please read the following scriptures: Proverbs 13:5 which teach that the ways of a transgressor are hard

and Numbers 32:23 which teaches that your sins will find you out.
